Giant Eagle intends to buy new Volvo CNG trucks

Energy Inc -- A partnership between Giant Eagle and Volvo has birthed a new, giant baby — the world’s first Volvo truck with a 12-liter Cummins compressed natural gas engine.

That’s according to Chris Gossler, regional vice president – Northeast for Volvo Trucks North America.

Brandon Borgna, spokesman for Volvo trucks in North America, says there were other companies for whom the idea of putting a CNG engine in a heavy duty truck also made sense and that’s why the truck manufacturer started churning out these vehicles last year.

Volvo first started making a truck with an 8.9-liter CNG engine, also from Cummins, last year, and Giant Eagle was the first recipient of that vehicle.

Now, Giant Eagle intends to order 40 of the bigger trucks as soon as Volvo starts mass producing them, according to Dave S

Mass transportation is a good target for CNG, hopefully this will catch on with them more and more.

Ruan Transport hauls milk from the Fair Oaks diary with CNG powered Kenworths. They are easy to identify with big square tanks and a box on the back for CNG. I've driven CNg trucks and they are ok but totally nutless compared to a diesel with half the horsepower and worse economy. I guess with the cheap price of CNG it makes sense.

May the trucks, Volvo, and Giant Eagle live long and prosper.

It is the only way big trucks will meet the EPA mandate on pollutants.

Great! Every new initiative helps. They can probably fill their nat-gas tanks right at their terminal.

Hope this works out for Giant Eagle. I wonder though what the range of these trucks is before needing "fill ups". Certainly won't work for long distance truckers 'til they get more refueling stations along the interstates.

Can't they make it a hybrid also? We need to focus on conserving as much of any fuel we use. Why waste it if you don't have to?

Manufacturers Pleeeease lay off the Compressed gases. Natural gas is fine but need to use Liquid not compressed. The CNG is toooo dangerous to have a large # of vehicles using. Use LNG if possible instead.
