Electronic Auto Insurance

KLFY.com -- A new law will allow Louisiana drivers to use smart phones or any other electronic device to show proof of insurance coverage. Following strong support by legislators... Governor Bobby Jindal signed the bill into law last week making Louisiana the third state, after Idaho and Arizona, in the U-S to enact such a law.

Under the new law, drivers must have images or photocopies of a policy card or documents when showing coverage to authorities to prove they have the proper forms in place to operate a vehicle.

Lawmakers say having electronic-proof will benefit all motorists as smart phones are becoming more wide-spread among drivers. The law goes into affect August 1st.

Right on. Big brother isn't in our lives enough already. Bring on more surveillance, more intrusions and tie a camera to our heads. Implant a gps tracker under my skin and tattoo my forearm so they know which concentration camp -- sorry re-education camp- to send me to.

Those who give up freedom for security deserve neither.

Better yet make the insurance companies report to a central data base info on the drivers coverage. That way it's updated instantly, and availabe to ALL officiers in any state.

Making the driver have the proof on his phone - WRONG!

Great idea. I think the insurance companies should report a driver to the state when they drop coverage. There's too many that buy insurance just to get their vehicle registered, then drop coverage.

Nice option in theory unless your phone is lost. Or you have a dead battery.

That would seem to make it easier to try and trick authorities.

I think a better way would be to have the police be able to check their computers to see whether they have a valid policy on file. Or they could set it up to tie in directly to the insurance company's database to verify they have a valid policy in force.

Even if the drivers didn't make or alter an old card to put on their smart phone, it's pretty common for people to buy a policy when it's time to renew their drivers license, pay one month and then let it lapse. They can use the ID card for 6 months, and with the many free programs out there for editing photos and .pdf files it's a simple matter to change the dates at will.

This solution is not so high tech as it may sound at first glance. It's more of a gimmick that can easily be abused, to the detriment of the innocent victims injured by uninsured drivers.

Makes a lot of sense. Another method allowed in lieu of paper.

Ok. Would be wise to carry some kind of backup tho. What if the battery goes? What if you phone is stolen? What if there's a blackout of some kind?
We have to carry proof of insurance here and the carrier sends it to you. I'm fine w/ that.

Well, I do not have a smart phone, so I guess my paper proof of insurance will have to do.
