We've spent some of our wintertime in Destin, FL, in the panhandle. It's not as warm as farther south, but the accommodations are much cheaper.

There is nothing like a winter break in Florida. Love the excess temperatures when it's doing the -30 stuff back home. We stayed in Destin only 2 days and enjoyed it very much. A bit of traffic but no rush when we're on holidays. You got me thinking warm winter thoughts already and I can't wait to see out buds back in Key West.

They seem to have a good number of conventions in Destin. I have not been to any of them, but they must get a good turnout because they come again the next year.

Plan ahead and know some history. Florida can be a good adventure.

To answer "Corngator": Spanish? Honeychile, this is in the Panhandle of Florida, in other words; the armpit of Alabama. Although, thanks to the many retired military, the southern accent is not as extreme as in Alabama.

The traffic in Destin is terrible. I used to work in SanDestin (just east of Destin) and it took me TWO HOURS to drive to work and another TWO HOURS to drive home. I could SEE the next traffic light ahead, and it would take three complete changes (3 X green) before I could get through, and this is multiple times along Highway 98. The same drive, much later at night, takes me half of an hour to get home. The houses are huge. The condominiums are tall and block much of the view of the beaches.

I love this area. It is the Carribean in America. The beaches are wonderful..especially Pensacola and Santa Rosa beaches. The sound is white like powdered sugar. My favorite place in Florida.

I have heard nothing but good things about Destin! I know two separate couples that loved the place! I hope to travel there sometime soon.

Destin sounds great, do they speak spanish there?
I have not learned how to speak Spanish and had to move out of Palm Beach.

We stay in Winter Haven, FL in the winter. I love it down there! We will be leaving in about 2 weeks.

come to the hurricane capital of Fl, Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte. Bring your own RV to stay in though.
